Representatives of women's groups from throughout the district were recently invited to participate in a Womens Awareness workshop run by the Reproductive Health team. The workshop was held at VSHC on May 3rd. The aim of the workshop was to contribute to the empowerment of rural women and girls in regard to their own reproductive health. There were presentations on a range of problems that women face in their daily lives followed by group discussions on how they can make a difference for themselves and in their respective communities.

The day started with registrations and questionnaires on participants needs and expectations.
The first session had presentations on the "Empowerment of Women", "Adolescent/Teenage Pregnancy", "Self Awareness and Values" and the "Role of Society in Teenage Issues".
This was followed by group discussions on the topic of "Disempowering Factors for Girls and Women" and then morning tea.
The second session had presentations on "Sexually Transmitted Diseases", "Cervical Cancer and Genital Human Papillomavirus", "Pap Smears", "Consequences of Unplanned Pregnancy and Ante Natal Care" and "Contraception and Family Planning" again followed by group discussions and then lunch.
The afternoon session had two presentations one on "Breast Feeding and Breast Examination" and the second on "Maternal and Child Health". This was followed by more group discussions on the topics of "How can Women Advocate and Make a Difference in the Community" and "Behavioural Change Concepts."
