GENDER BASED VIOLENCE and HUMAN RIGHTS – Friday 2nd December, 2016

"NO MORE SILENCE - SAY NO TO VIOLENCE!”

Viseisei Sai Health Centre’s EU funded CCOHSI Project organized a March and an awareness program on the 2nd Dec 2016 in Viseisei on Gender Based Violence and Human Rights.

A march through Viseisei was conducted followed by an awareness workshop with stakeholders and the community.

The Chief Guest, the Divisional Women’s Interest Officer Western, Ms Renu Dayal gave an insight to the problems faced in Fiji.

Associate Prof Swaran Naidu spoke on Gender Based Violence and its impact on individuals, families and society.

Community Health workers who have been trained by Viseisei Sai Health Centre talked about their experiences in the communities as well as personally in their homes as victims of violence. Some of them have become empowered after their training and no longer are victims, as their partners have responded to their knowledge and empowered state and stopped abusing them.

Two inspectors from the Lautoka Police station in charge of domestic violence cases gave practical advice on the law and what recourse victims have.

A Counsellor and a Social Worker from Empower Pacific spoke about ways of dealing with victims and the services available to them.

SAY NO TO VIOLENCE.
